At Derby Street Pharmacy, we offer free NHS blood pressure checks for adults aged 40 and over. The test takes about five minutes, and you will get your results straight away. If your reading is high, our pharmacist will explain what it means and recommend next steps.
This service is part of the NHS Hypertension Case Finding programme. You do not need to book, and you do not need to see your GP first.

The NHS blood pressure check is available to:
- Adults aged 40 and over who have not been diagnosed with high blood pressure
- People who have not had a blood pressure check in the last 12 months
- Anyone concerned about their blood pressure (a private check may apply for under 40s)

What should I do before a blood pressure check?
Avoid caffeine, smoking, and exercise for at least 30 minutes before your check. Try to relax for a few minutes before the reading is taken. Wear a short-sleeved top or loose sleeves so the cuff fits comfortably.
What is a normal blood pressure reading?
A healthy blood pressure reading is between 90/60 and 120/80 mmHg. Readings consistently above 140/90 may indicate high blood pressure. Our pharmacist will explain your results clearly and suggest what to do next.
What happens if my blood pressure is high?
If your reading is elevated, we may recommend ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), where you wear a monitor for 24 hours to get a more accurate picture. We can also refer you to your GP for further investigation and treatment.
How often should I check my blood pressure?
If your blood pressure is normal, a check every five years is usually sufficient for adults over 40. If your reading is borderline or you have risk factors, more frequent checks are recommended. Ask our pharmacist for personalised advice.
