What Causes a Sore Throat?
A sore throat is one of the most common reasons people visit a healthcare provider. Most sore throats are caused by viral infections such as colds or flu and will improve on their own within a week. However, some sore throats are caused by a bacterial infection, most commonly Group A Streptococcus (strep throat), which may require antibiotic treatment.
Symptoms of a sore throat can include pain or a scratchy sensation in the throat, difficulty swallowing, swollen and red tonsils (sometimes with white patches or pus), swollen glands in the neck, and fever. In children, a sore throat can be particularly distressing and may affect their ability to eat and drink.

How does the pharmacist decide if I need antibiotics for a sore throat?
Our pharmacist uses the FeverPAIN clinical scoring system, which is recommended by NICE guidelines for assessing sore throats. This takes into account factors such as fever in the last 24 hours, absence of cough, how quickly symptoms started, whether your tonsils are inflamed, and whether you have pus on your tonsils. Based on this score, the pharmacist will recommend the most appropriate treatment.
Who is eligible for sore throat treatment under Pharmacy First?
The NHS Pharmacy First sore throat service is available to patients aged 5 and over. If you have a child under 5 with a sore throat, our pharmacist can still provide advice and may recommend you visit your GP or contact NHS 111 for further assessment.
What can I do at home to ease a sore throat?
To relieve symptoms, you can gargle with warm salty water, drink plenty of fluids, eat cool or soft foods, avoid smoking and smoky environments, suck ice lollies or lozenges, and take paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain and fever. Our pharmacist will provide personalised advice during your consultation.
Is this service really free?
Yes. The NHS Pharmacy First service is fully funded by the NHS. There is no charge for the consultation or for any medication prescribed as part of the service, regardless of your prescription exemption status.
When should I go to A&E for a sore throat?
Seek urgent medical attention if you have difficulty breathing, are unable to swallow saliva or fluids, have a muffled voice or difficulty opening your mouth, have severe swelling on one side of the throat, or are feeling very unwell with a high temperature. For emergencies, call 999. For urgent advice, call NHS 111.
