Shingles (herpes zoster) is a painful condition caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus - the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you recover from chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in your nerve cells and can reactivate years later, causing shingles.

Why is it important to get treatment within 72 hours?
Antiviral medication is most effective when started within 72 hours of the rash first appearing. Early treatment can shorten the duration of shingles, reduce the severity of symptoms, and lower the risk of complications such as postherpetic neuralgia (ongoing nerve pain after the rash has healed).
Is shingles contagious?
You cannot catch shingles from someone who has it. However, a person with active shingles blisters can pass on the varicella-zoster virus to someone who has never had chickenpox, causing them to develop chickenpox. You should avoid contact with pregnant women, newborns, and people with weakened immune systems until your blisters have crusted over.
